Shackleton Heritage Gates

New steel gates and grilles for two historic arches — scanned, modelled against the original masonry and detailed to modern standards without touching the old fabric's character.

Tekla model of new steel gates and grilles set within two historic stone arches

Heritage steelwork is a conversation with what's already there. For the Shackleton boundary works in Athy, two existing masonry arches were captured with 3D point-cloud scanning, and two new gate structures were detailed against that as-built geometry.

The curved, irregular profiles of the historic openings set the rules: every interface between new steel and original fabric was modelled to minimise impact on the existing structure while bringing the new elements up to modern engineering standards.

It is the same scan-led discipline OD3 applied inside the building on the museum stair — applied here to the boundary that frames it.

Outcome

New gates that sit naturally in century-old openings — heritage character kept, modern engineering standards met.
