Steel Detailing
Structural and architectural steelwork — stairs, balustrades, metalwork — detailed in Tekla by a Trimble-certified team, with fabrication and GA drawings, NC output and material lists.
OD3 delivers steel detailing services in Tekla Structures for fabricators and contractors across the UK and Ireland — structural frames and architectural metalwork, stairs and balustrades, detailed by a Trimble-certified team and issued as complete fabrication packages: workshop drawings, GA and erection drawings, NC files and material lists.
Detailing that scales with your programme
Detailing capacity is usually the constraint that decides whether a steel package hits its fabrication slot. Using Tekla Model Share, we can put up to eight detailers into a single live model on demand, working concurrently rather than in sequence. Every detailer is Trimble-certified across Model Management, Steel Drawings and System Customisation, so adding capacity does not mean adding inconsistency. Projects are backed up and encrypted in the cloud, with secure access from anywhere through Trimble Connect — your project manager sees the same model we do.
Built to the standards your contracts demand
Detailing is carried out to National Structural Steelwork Specification (5th Edition) working practice, with connections to Eurocode 3 — and because connection design happens in the same practice, in IDEA StatiCa, the details on your drawings are the details that passed their checks. That removes the most common source of fabrication-stage rework: a detailer interpreting someone else's connection design. The practice carries £2m professional indemnity insurance and has been detailing steel since 2012, with membership of the SCI, Constructionline and the Irish Association of Steel Fabricators.
One model from survey to site
Detailing sits in the middle of our digital thread: capture, model, design, plan, build, verify. On refurbishment and extension work, we can start the Tekla model from our own point-cloud survey — as-built geometry accurate to ±2mm — instead of trusting record drawings. At the other end, the same model drives robotic total station setout and as-built verification on site. For a fabricator, that means steel detailed against what actually exists, and checked against what actually got built.
FAQs
- What does a fabrication package include?
- Workshop fabrication drawings, GA and erection drawings, NC files for your machinery, and material lists, all generated from a single Tekla Structures model. Connection calculation reports are included where we have carried out the connection design. Everything is issued through Trimble Connect, so revisions are controlled and your team always works from the current issue.
- How do you handle tight programmes or peak workload?
- Through Tekla Model Share we can scale up to eight detailers working concurrently in one live model, on demand. Because the team works in a shared model rather than splitting drawings between offices, scaling up does not fragment the package or introduce interface errors between detailers.
- What standards do you detail to?
- National Structural Steelwork Specification (5th Edition) working practice, with connection design to Eurocode 3 — standard joints to the SCI Green Book and non-standard connections checked in IDEA StatiCa. Every detailer is Trimble-certified in Model Management, Steel Drawings and System Customisation.
- Can you detail against an existing building rather than record drawings?
- Yes. We carry out our own 3D laser scanning and produce as-built models accurate to ±2mm, then detail the new steelwork in Tekla against that captured geometry. On refurbishments and extensions this removes the risk of steel arriving on site cut to dimensions the building never had.
- Where do you work, and how is the model shared?
- Detailing is cloud-delivered across the UK and Ireland — we have delivered large contracts throughout both since 2012. Models and drawings are exchanged through Trimble Connect, with projects fully backed up and encrypted in the cloud, so your engineers and site team can access the current model securely from anywhere.
